Charl’s top tips for looking after your roof and gutters

Updated: May 9, 2023

Maintaining a healthy roof and gutter is key in ensuring your home remains warm and dry. Check out our top tips for looking after your roof and gutters ahead of the wet season

  1. Look up At least twice a year (autumn and spring are a great time for this), do a visual inspection from a good angle of elevation. During your visual inspection look for signs of damage including: - lifting of roofing material - fixings that have lifted - sagging or broken gutters - build up of leaves and debris If damage is present, this is a good time to contact your professional roofing partner to do a thorough inspection of the state of your roof and to repair any areas of concern.

  2. Clean your gutters Overflowing gutters can cause a raft of issues if left unchecked, from rotting your fascia, to cracking and breaking your gutters. Cleaning your gutters yourself or having a professional power wash away any build up can help extend the life of your gutters and is an easy way to maintain the health of your roof year-round.

  3. Trim your trees Branches which overhang onto your roof surface create the perfect environment for algae and moss to form by reducing the airflow and surface drying area on your roof. To combat this, trimming overhanging branches and removing debris and build-up can help ensure moisture can dry quickly, and your roof is receiving enough sunlight and ventilation.

  4. Get an inspection Having a professional inspect the state of your roof annually and after any significant weather event or instance of damage provides peace of mind and the assurance that your roof is in top condition.
